Pamela Slim is an author and business coach who helps frustrated corporate employees break out and start their own companies. Her blog and book, Escape from Cubicle Nation, help people discover work that they’re truly passionate about. Pam believes the key to economic and social recovery is in our youth. Instead of talking about the apathy of the new generation, we need to clear the way and support them to do their thing. As we allow the free minds of our younger generation to escape the traditional corporate world, economic recovery will follow. As Pam learned from Amanda Wang, our greatest pain can be our greatest source of power. There is hope.

Recorded at TEDxPhoenix 2010.

If you’re unfamiliar with TEDx, then think of it as an independently organized, hyper-local version of the TED Conference where organizers around the world attempt to bring a taste of TED to their community. In addition, every TEDx speaker has a shot at making it to TED.com if the folks at TED HQ feel that the talk is TED worthy, and here’s where it gets a bit tricky.

Now consider this, in order for a TEDxTalk to be considered for TED.com, it first has to be viewed by the folks at TED. Taking into account that there’s an average of 300 TEDxTalks being generated each month, then it’s obvious that the folks at TED have a lot of work ahead of them.

So with this in mind, we at TEDxPhoenix wanted to see if we could bring attention to some great TEDxTalks we’ve come across on the TEDx YouTube Channel, that we feel deserve a spot on TED.com. Also in the spirit of TED, we’re avoiding self-praise by not including TEDxPhoenix talks, but do check them out if you get a chance.

By the way, if any TEDx organizers post their own version of “5 Great TEDxTalks Not on TED.com”, then contact us and we’ll link to your post at the end of this article. So without further ado, here’s our list of five great TEDxTalks not (yet) on TED.com!

Want to speak at TEDxPhoenix 11.11.11? For our November 11th, 2011 TEDxPhoenix event, we’re trying something new by asking the local community to submit a video of their idea for a TEDxPhoenix 11.11.11 talk.

The theme for TEDxPhoenix 11.11.11 is “_____ for a Change”, where the blank will be filled by the speaker’s topic or idea. For example, if your idea is about using comedy to bridge cultural differences, then you could use “Laugh for a Change.”

The theme is meant to showcase ideas and endeavors that are bringing about interesting, unexpected, and positive changes in the local and global communities. TEDxPhoenix also aims to highlight unique and interesting dance, spoken-word, improv, and musical performances as well.

If you would like to try your hand at a video submission, have a look at the detailed instructions and application form.

Goran Konjevod is a mathematician and theoretical computer scientist who has taken his origami hobby to the next level by exploring new and original works. His pieces are formed by the tension of the paper (or even metal) when multiple layers are arranged according to their regular or irregular patterns — in a sense, they’re organically discovered rather than invented or designed. Recorded at TEDxPhoenix 2010.
